FAQ

DON’T I NEED A BOATING LICENCE?

French law does not require a licence for rented recreational boats of 15 metres or less in length, and with engine power not exceeding a ratio proportional to its size. A theory-based and practical introduction to boat handling, given at the base before you start out, will enable you to get to grips with your boat quickly and master the basics of boating. A licence will be issued to you for the duration of your trip.

WILL I BE ABLE TO HANDLE THE BOAT?

Yes. It is not necessary to have any special skills or previous experience to hire a river boat! River tourism boats are easy to handle and simple to steer, and just a few minutes training is enough. Upon arriving at your base, and once installed aboard your boat, an expert will arrive to explain the basics about your equipment, the engine and the rest of the craft. He will then give you a brief navigation lesson and teach you to manoeuvre your boat. He will also be happy to answer any questions you may have. You will quickly feel at home in the cockpit.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

Boating holidays offer great value for money. They are a very affordable kind of break. The length of your cruise, the type of boat you choose and the number of passengers on board will determine the rate you pay.
The boat hire rate is usually indicated for a full week – you can simply split the cost between the number of people on the boat. Then, judge for yourself.
Rates depend on the boat’s capacity and level of comfort, the time of year and the length of your break; they generally range from €300 to €400 per person and per week. Hire rates include the boat, its equipment, dishes and eating utensils, and bedding. They also include boat insurance, any tolls you will have to pay on your trip, a supply of water (for around two days) and gas (enough for a week). You will be charged for a tank of diesel fuel (for one to two weeks, depending on the boat) at the end of your trip, depending on how much you have used.

WHEN SHOULD I BOOK?

Don’t leave it too late… boating is very popular and it’s best to book well in advance: get in touch with the boat hire companies who are members of the French Nautical Industries Federation, to get answers to your questions, find out availability and make a reservation.

HOW DO I NAVIGATE A LOCK?

Navigating locks is a simple and pleasant procedure, provided you follow some basic rules: always take it slowly, and carefully. The lock-keeper is responsible for the procedure, and will guide you through it. Navigating locks is free and usually takes around 20 minutes.

CAN I SAIL AT NIGHT?

Boating on rivers at night is not permitted, due to the difficulty in manoeuvring craft in the dark. For information, locks are only open during the day.
