The Canal du Midi, the other jewel in the crown

> La Dépè (20 june 2012)

The exceptional work of Pierre-Paul Riquet, built in the 16th century and diverted via Carcassonne in 1777-1798, the Canal du Midi has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. It has to be seen at first hand, to appreciate the immensity of the task completed over 300 years ago. Representing the pinnacle of the hydrographical, topographic, geometric and architectural arts of the age, the canal remains every bit as impressive to this day.

In Carcassonne, visitors can explore the canal by hiring a boat.
